2021 Training Recap

2021

This as a challenging year to conduct a training. COVID-19 has impacted the entire world. Despite this KOPI and ALMC partnered on a project to continue education in prehospital emergency medicine for traffic police and mental health education for doctors and nurses.

There was a great sense of responsibility this year to keep everyone safe. Class sizes were reduced, masks were provided, temperatures were taken, and other infection prevention measures were put in place. There were a few students that returned from our 2019 cohort that demonstrated a strong retention in knowledge. Below is short video from one of our field training days.

On the mental health side, we provided education on integrative behavioral health, verbal de-escalation, trauma informed restraint practices, and medications for mood disorders. Much of this was adapted from the World Health Organization Mental Health Gap Action Programme. We plan to expand and continue this education in 2022 based on our partner’s needs.

KOPI is looking forward to returning to Arusha in 2022 to continue the work. This will include continued program evaluation efforts with a plan to publish our results once they are complete.
