Point of Care Ultrasonography in Emergency Medicine

Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) has become a cornerstone of acute care because it gives clinicians immediate, bedside diagnostic information without the delays, cost, or radiation exposure associated with CT or formal radiology studies. It allows rapid assessment of life-threatening conditions—such as free fluid in trauma (FAST exam), cardiac tamponade, pneumothorax, or aortic aneurysm—often changing management within minutes of a patient's arrival. Ultrasound also guides procedures like central line placement, paracentesis, and nerve blocks, improving safety and first-pass success rates. Because it's portable, repeatable, and doesn't require moving an unstable patient, it's especially valuable in resource-limited or prehospital settings where advanced imaging isn't readily available. Overall, POCUS shortens time to diagnosis, reduces reliance on scarce resources, and directly improves outcomes in time-sensitive emergencies.
